Despite warnings from the House GOP leadership to avoid holding town halls during the summer break, Rep. Bryan Stiel (R-WI) decided to give it a shot on Thursday night — and was promptly showered with boos and told that he is “an embarrassment” to the state for supporting Donald Trump.
On Friday morning, MSNBC shared clips from the event in Elkhorn, where the embattled Republican was pressed on ICE raid conducted by masked agents — with answer being drowned out by jeers and booing.
Asked, “Why are they [ICE agents] wearing masks and why are they unidentified?” the GOP lawmaker replied, “We’ll probably agree to disagree on some of my answers here. But what I view is the moral hazard created by the Biden administration by allowing the U.S. border to remain unsecure and so … ,” before the boos and catcalls overwhelmed him.
An elderly man holding a small American flag started with, “I am so disappointed,” which led another man to loudly shout “Yeah!”
He then began again with, “I am so disappointed in how you represent us as the citizen of Walworth County. Southeast Wisconsin has not been represented by you. President Trump seems to run southeast Wisconsin through you. And all I have to ask is, I will be out there working hard if you choose to run for any office.”
A woman bluntly told him, “I don’t think you’re the right fit for us anymore,” to more cheers.
“I just think it’s time to go,” she added. “You just don’t relate to most of us anymore and you gotta know when to step down. I think it’s time.”
That led to a loud round of applause.
Reporting on the town hall, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel noted, “Before the town hall started, a group of about 50 demonstrators gathered outside the high school to protest Steil’s vote for Trump’s bill, noting it slashed Medicaid and food assistance programs. Wisconsin health officials previously estimated the legislation could cause tens of thousands of Wisconsinites to lose Medicaid coverage.”
