President Donald Trump’s press conference on Sunday amounted to little more than “arguably, a very bizarre few minutes,” according to one MSNBC host.
Trump held the press conference after traveling back from New Jersey to attend the FIFA Club World Cup match between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain. The president rattled through some of his favorite talking points, like whether he should fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and his disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin, before concluding with the discomforting refrain, “We will see what we will see.”
MSNBC host Ayman Mohyeldin shared his thoughts on his eponymous show, “Ayman Mohyeldin Reports.”
“We will see what we will see,” Mohyeldin recounted. “That is how President Trump wrapped up arguably a very bizarre few minutes.”
The host said it was “kind of an odd statement to say about war.”
The press conference occurred at a politically sensitive time for Trump. For instance, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy F.B.I. Director Dan Bongino are reportedly in a tiff over the release of the Jeffrey Epstein case files. Trump campaigned on the promise to release the files, but his administration has since backtracked.
Last week, the Department of Justice issued an unsigned opinion saying that Epstein died by suicide, and he didn’t keep an incriminating client list. The event was met with fierce backlash from Trump’s MAGA base.
Bongino has reportedly threatened to resign over the issue.
Some of the questions Trump received also led Mohyeldin to wonder whether some of the people at the press conference were journalists.
“They seemed to pave the way for the president to sort of wax lyrical about how great he is and what an incredible job he is doing,” Mohyeldin said.
