Trump’s impeachments disappear from Smithsonian amid White House pressure: report

The Smithsonian has removed references to President Donald Trump’s two impeachments from the National Museum of American History, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.

“A temporary label including content about Trump’s impeachments had been on display since September 2021 at the Washington museum, a Smithsonian spokesperson told The Washington Post, adding that it was intended to be a short-term addition to address current events. Now, the exhibit notes that ‘only three presidents have seriously faced removal,’” reported Janay Kingsberry.

Following the release of the report, the Smithsonian issued a further statement clarifying that “a future and updated exhibit will include all impeachments.” However, per an insider, the removal of that display “came about as part of a content review that the Smithsonian agreed to undertake following pressure from the White House.”

That content review came as Trump ordered the removal of an art director for the National Portrait Gallery, whom he claimed was “highly partisan.”

Trump’s first impeachment in early 2020 was for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, stemming from his efforts to use arms shipments to extort Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy into announcing an investigation of Joe Biden’s family, around the time he was gearing up to run for president. His second impeachment was in 2021, just days before he left office, stemming from his incitement of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Trump, who was acquitted in the Senate on both impeachments even as some Republicans joined Democrats to vote to convict, has shown no remorse for either of these incidents, and one of his first acts upon being re-elected was to pardon around 1,500 people who stormed the Capitol on his behalf.
