Trump’s campaign rhetoric is ‘starting to come back on him’: reporter

President Donald Trump’s attacks on President Joe Biden for the economy are coming back to bite him as consumer confidence falls.

Ernie Tedeschi, director of economics at the Budget Lab at Yale University, said on Wednesday on MSNBC that the impact of tariffs is already hitting consumers as demand is increasing for items made overseas.

He said that the experts at the Budget Lab calculated “that it will be a major headwind to the economy, but it’s not going to plunge us into a recession.”

But John Nichols, national affairs correspondent at The Nation, said this is a redux of Trump’s 2024 campaign, where Americans said they were facing struggles while the raw data showed something different.

“We’re in America in this era because — I just covered a presidential campaign last year, and that was sort of the reality of that campaign. There were people in Washington and consultants saying, ‘Well, you don’t know how good you have it, and you should feel better about this.’ And voters’ response to that was to say, ‘we’re sorry, we don’t feel good.’”

He noted that Trump was elected in part by telling people that he would make everything “great immediately,” but he’s failed to deliver.

“And I think this is one of the subtleties of the polling numbers on the handling of the economy, because, yes, he said, put me in there. I’m going to do this. Well, we have had tariffs on some countries, then we withdraw them, then we put them on again, then we withdraw them. It has been very chaotic,” Nichols continued.

He noted that Americans have watched the erratic swings from the White House, while at the same time, people haven’t seen their lives get dramatically better.

“And remember, it’s not just a measure of if you’re holding, it’s this promise that it’ll get better. And I think this is starting to come back on Donald Trump in much the same way that he put it onto both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris,” Nichols closed.
