Above and beyond Donald Trump having to deal with the relentless blowback over the failure to release the Jeffrey Epstein files, his White House is in turmoil over the poor jobs report and a softening of his support in Congress.
Building upon his report for The Atlantic, where he pointed out that Trump’s second term is not going nearly as well as Republicans would like to think, MSNBC’s Jonathan Lemire said there is trouble ahead for the White House.
After noting Trump’s overall approval numbers sit well below 50 percent, Lemire reported, “I mean, two of his strengths are supposed to be immigration and the economy –– he’s underwater on both. The economy, in particular right now, is something that worries the White House; that jobs report last week was disastrous. There were revisions downward from previous months as well. We’ve seen him fire the BLS commissioner and then put together these Project 2025 Heritage Foundation numbers yesterday.”
Noting GOP lawmakers growing increasingly antsy about the budget bill they provided him despite reservations and unpopularity with voters, Lemire added, “Joe, this is the first time we’ve seen Republicans, one of the rare times Republicans are willing to break from Trump, not just on Epstein, but also kind of running away from some parts of the so-called one big beautiful bill.”
“You know, going to these town halls and being yelled at, you know, [Missouri GOP Senator] Josh Hawley, just as one example, trying to back away from the Medicaid cuts he just voted for a few weeks ago,” Lemire elaborated. “And those I talked to in the White House acknowledged that the president’s popularity among Republicans is still very high. This is even the first time they’re seeing some willingness to, for those in the GOP to defect and defy.”
