Trump is’telegraphing’ the impact of his latest trade deal: analyst

President Donald Trump’s latest trade deal could be bad news for American consumers, according to one analyst.

On Sunday, Trump announced that the U.S. and the European Union had agreed to a trade deal framework that includes 15% tariffs on all goods imported from the 27-country bloc. The E.U. had previously sought to keep tariffs at the current 10% level.

Journalist Yamiche Alcindor, White House correspondent for NBC News, said during an interview on MSNBC’s “Alex Witt Reports” that Trump has already “telegraphed” the impact this deal will have on American consumers.

“The president has been warning American consumers that there may be some pain in the front end and that he wants people to bear with him, so in some ways he’s already telegraphing to Americans that prices may go up,” Alcindor said.

During his presidential campaign, Trump promised to address the growing cost-of-living concerns for Americans. One of the ways he’s attempted to do this is by imposing tariffs on America’s trading partners, which he claims will eventually lower prices. Some economists disagree with Trump’s tactics.

Alcindor added that Trump’s trade deals could become a political problem for the president if they don’t have their intended impact.

“We do get this sense that [people in the White House] are concerned about prices going up,” Alcindor said. “The president’s own supporters understood that he wanted to put tariffs. This was not a secret that he was going to go after different countries and try to increase tariffs.”

“But there is this real sense of foreboding and bracing to see how bad price increases could get,” Alcindor continued. “Of course, if you have people starting to complain…that could become a political issue for the president.”
