President Donald Trump will hit a major U.S. ally with a massive new tax as a punishment for its alliance with Russia, he announced Wednesday.
Despite Trump cultivating a close friendship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a conservative leader who recently visited the White House and has held joint rallies with Trump, the president unleashed an attack on him on Truth Social.
Trump focused on high tariffs that he said had led to a “massive trade deficit” with the country and was hindering trade.
But he saved special focus for Modi’s relationship with Russia and its leader Vladimir Putin.
“Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country,” Trump wrote.
“Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!
“INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!”
Trump’s attack came as he has recently become much more critical of Putin, having been seen recently to have apparently lost patience with the Russian leader over Ukraine.
