Trump admin launches probe into NY prosecutor who charged him with fraud

The Trump administration’s Justice Department launched a new investigation into the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James, which last year launched and won a $464 million fraud case against President Donald Trump, NBC News reported Friday.

According to three insiders who spoke with NBC News on the condition of anonymity, the investigation is into whether James’ office “caused deprivation of legal rights” for its case against Trump, as well as another case her office pursued against the National Rifle Association.

James’ office, which had been targeted by Trump’s DOJ once already during the president’s second term, called the investigation a “weaponization of the justice system,” and stood behind its record.

“Any weaponization of the justice system should disturb every American,” James’ office said in a statement to NBC News. “We stand strongly behind our successful litigation against the Trump Organization and the National Rifle Association, and we will continue to stand up for New Yorkers’ rights.”

The New York AG Office’s successful probe last year into Trump and his companies found that the president had “intentionally” inflated the value of his assets in financial statements in a ploy to “take advantage” of lower insurance rates and loan agreements, rates and agreements he otherwise wouldn’t have been entitled to.

Trump was ultimately ordered to pay a judgement of $464 million, with a daily increase of nearly $112,000 until the judgement was paid in full.
