‘Those children look very hungry’: Cracks show as Trump hits Netanyahu over Gaza famine

President Donald Trump disputed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s characterization of the suffering in Gaza during a meeting with Britain’s prime minister Monday.

Human rights organizations have denounced Israel as committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, where at least 147 people, including 88 children, have died from malnutrition in recent months, and Trump disagreed with Netanyahu’s statement this weekend that there was “no starvation” in the Israeli-occupied territory.

“I don’t know, I mean, based on television, I would say not particularly because those children look very hungry,” Trump told reporters in Scotland when asked if he agreed.

“But we’re giving a lot of money and a lot of food, and other nations are now stepping up. I know that this nation is, right here,” he said, talking about the United Kingdom.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who was meeting with Trump at his Turnberry golf resort to discuss trade and Gaza, agreed the situation was dire.

“It’s a humanitarian crisis, right?” Starmer said. “It’s absolute catastrophe, and nobody, nobody wants to see that, and I think people in Britain are revolted at seeing what they’re seeing on their screens. So we’ve got to get to that ceasefire, and thank you, Mr. President, for leading on that, and also to just get more and more aid in, and again, America has done a lot on this. A lot of countries have done a lot. We’re now working with Jordan on getting direct aid drops in, but this is a desperate situation.”
