‘This woman is a joke’: Nancy Mace announcement draws blistering response

Early Monday morning, August 4, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina) posted a video to her website announcing that she is running for governor of South Carolina. The “Nancy Mace For Governor” video contains a collage of Fox News appearances painting the GOP congresswoman as an aggressive fighter for President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda and the far-right MAGA movement.

Mace, with this announcement, joins a GOP gubernatorial primary field that also includes State Attorney General Alan Wilson, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman (R-South Carolina) and State Sen. Josh Kimbrell.

Mace hasn’t always had the ultra-MAGA tone displayed in her campaign video.

First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020, Mace was critical of Trump after the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol Building. And she bitterly clashed with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia), who attacked her as an enemy of the MAGA movement and called her “trash in the GOP conference” as well as a RINO (Republican In Name Only).

But these days, Mace paints herself as a fearless defender of MAGA and often resorts to performative antics — for example, telling liberal firebrand Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) she wants to “take it outside.”

Mace’s August 4 gubernatorial announcement is drawing a great deal of discussion on X, formerly Twitter.

Author Tony Posnanski told Mace, “Awesome! Cannot wait to see you lose.”

In a separate tweet, Posnanski noted how much of a flip-flopper Mace is, posting, “It is so funny to me…. Nancy has been Anti MAGA for years and then one day she says “Yay Trump” and you fall for it. I swear, you all are the dumbest f—— around. No wonder MAGA wins, the dumbest people follow.”

South Carolina State Rep. Jermain Johnson, a Democrat and former professional basketball player, commented, “Whoever is advising Nancy Mace to get in the race deserves a raise! This has to be a chess move. She’s going to lose her Congressional seat and lose in the governor’s primary race. Lets collectively thank that person for helping us silence the hate coming from her mouth.”

In the UK, The Independent noted, “Trump’s biggest-GOP-critic became his biggest fan. He could lose her to governor bid .”

Radio host Heidi Harris commented, “I can’t even….This woman is a joke. No one needs someone who ‘leads with her heart.’ We need someone who leads with her BRAIN. ‘Rep. Nancy Mace announces run for South Carolina governor.’”
