New Hampshire Republican Senate candidate Scott Brown suggested that people concerned about current rates of inflation should cut back on T-bone steak, just like him.
Brown, who previously served as the senator from Massachusetts and mounted prior unsuccessful bids for Senate in New Hampshire, made the comments while being interviewed by Tom Shattuck on a right-wing podcast. The interview was flagged and posted to X by Danny Abbas, research director and the liberal opposition firm American Bridge.
This comes as President Donald Trump’s tariffs have been implicated in rising prices around the country after several years of struggle to get inflation under control.
“Many prices aren’t down. Why do you think that is? And what needs to be done?” asked Shattuck. He mentioned beef as a specific example.
“A lot of that is the high cost of actually producing that beef whether it’s the high cost of insurance, the high cost of energy, the high cost of employment, the rules and regulations that were put in place under the Biden administration,” said Brown, adding that Trump doesn’t have a “magic wand” and he hopes that Trump’s tax megabill will allow a surge of investment.
“So it’s going to take a little time, but there are things that you can do,” Brown continued. “Obviously, I don’t eat T-bones as much as I used to, but when I do, I recognize, yeah, this is a treat. But I do eat a lot of other things and I do try to eat as well as possible. I’ll go to Walmart, I’ll go to BJ’s, I’ll go to Market Basket. I’ll get something here and something there. That’s how I am.”
This comes after Brown also faced criticism for pushing antisemitic tropes about Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), saying that “he can’t even stand up for his country, his family’s country of origin, Israel.” Schumer is Jewish, but he was born in Brooklyn and his family came from Eastern Europe.
