Secret Service investigates agent who allegedly tried to sneak wife onto Trump’s plane

The U.S. Secret Service (USSS) drew a great deal of scrutiny when Donald Trump survived two assassination attempts during the 2024 presidential race. Now, six months into Trump’s second presidency, the Secret Service is facing another controversy — this time, because of an agent who allegedly tried to sneak his wife onto the plane that Trump used during his late July trip to Scotland.

On X, formerly Twitter, Real Clear Politics’ Susan Crabtree reported that the USSS agent “flew his wife to Maryland, then she even received the official Secret Service country brief at the hotel and rode the bus to the distinguished visitor lounge at Joint Base Andrews before she was discovered and told to leave, five Secret Service sources tell @RCPolitics.”

According to the Daily Beast’s Will Neal, the Secret Service has “launched an investigation” into the matter.

Neal, in an article published on July 29, reports, “A spokesperson for the Secret Service told the Daily Beast that ‘prior to the overseas departure, the employee was advised by supervisors that such action was prohibited, and the spouse was subsequently prevented from taking the flight,’ adding that ‘no Secret Service protectees were aboard and there was no impact to our overseas protective operations.’”

Crabtree also tweeted that the agent’s wife was employed by the U.S. Air Force, adding, “So the agent apparently used that detail as his excuse for the ‘misunderstanding.’”

Neal reports, “The revelations represent only the latest blunder to have emerged from President Trump’s weekend getaway to Scotland—one of the United Kingdom’s four constituent countries, and where more than 70 percent of people take a dim view of his policies and politics. Things were off to a rocky start even before his plane touched down in Glasgow on Friday, with Scottish daily newspaper The National running a front page that read ‘CONVICTED US FELON TO ARRIVE IN SCOTLAND.’”

The Daily Beast reporter adds, “Traveling from there to his Turnberry resort in the nation’s southwest, his motorcade was met with protesters holding up signs taking potshots at the president over the ongoing Epstein files furor — a sign of things to come, with rallies over the weekend in three cities across the country and outside his two golf courses.”

The Secret Service offered more details on its investigation in an official statement to Crabtree, saying, ” The aircraft, operated by the U.S. Air Force, was being used by the Secret Service to transport personnel and equipment. Prior to the overseas departure, the employee was advised by supervisors that such action was prohibited, and the spouse was subsequently prevented from taking the flight. No Secret Service protectees were aboard and there was no impact to our overseas protective operations.”
