A decision by Attorney General Pam Bondi to go on the the attack against former President Barack Obama based upon accusations made by DNI Tulsi Gabbard that the ex-president colluded with Russia in 2016 is a huge misstep, according to columnist Amanda Marcotte.
On Wednesday, the Salon columnist pointed out Bondi misjudged the public’s appetite for taking on Obama and it can be reflected in the response from the MAGA base which has not pounced on it in much the same way they have in the pursuit of Bill and Hillary Clinton.
According to Marcotte, that attack is “backfiring already.”
After writing, “No one, including Trump, seems to fully understand what Obama is even accused of doing in this elaborate conspiracy theory,” the Salon columnist added, “Fox News, Newsmax and other MAGA propaganda outlets are desperately trying to make this very dumb, very confusing conspiracy theory take off with the Trump base. So far the results have been lackluster.”
She goes on to note that the pursuit of Obama has only increased more scrutiny into the current president’s ties to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
“MAGA’s true thought leaders, like Charlie Kirk of Turning Point USA or Trump’s companion Laura Loomer, are paying little to no attention to the Russia story — likely because they know their followers don’t really care about it either,” she wrote. “On the contrary, their efforts to tweet about Obama lead to a sea of replies about the Epstein files, the very topic they are trying to avoid on Trump’s behalf.”
Noting that GOP lawmakers also don’t appear to be buying into it, she wrote, “this distraction effort isn’t working,” as they moved on to subpoena “the DOJ for a small number of records related to the [Epstein] case.”
