PA Democrat accuses Fetterman of ‘covering for Trump’ after senator claims economy is ‘going well’

Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.) appeared to set off an intra-party clash when he publicly challenged his fellow Democrat Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) over praising President Donald Trump’s trade war.

Fetterman on Saturday told Fox News Trump’s trade negotiations with the European Union are “going well” and claimed the presidents economic policies are “absolutely” succeeding.

In a post on the social platform X Saturday night, Boyle wrote that Democrats must stop “covering for Trump,” asserting that the president’s policies are failing on the economy. Boyle specifically pointed to Trump’s ouster of Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, saying, “Let’s be clear: Donald Trump is tanking the economy. That’s why he just fired the head of the BLS,” because the government data exposed a slowing labor market.

Boyle responded to a post from Fox News’s X account by accusing the senator of ignoring mounting evidence that the economy is faltering under Trump’s agenda.

The jolting July jobs report released Friday showed just 73,000 new positions added, with a massive downward revision carving away 258,000 jobs from May and June estimates. This report marked the weakest stretch since early 2022.

Trump dismissed the report as rigged, fired the BLS commissioner within hours and publicly accused the agency of political bias. Critics lambasted the move as authoritarian and damaging to the credibility of U.S. statistical agencies.

Several analysts warned that politicizing economic statistics could erode confidence among investors and policymakers alike.
