An off-duty police officer was among five dead after a gunman armed with a long rifle opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening, according to CNN.
Four people were killed by a man armed with a long gun, who opened fire around 6 p.m. Eastern Time inside 345 Park Ave., a law enforcement official told CNN. The suspected gunman, tentatively identified as a 27-year-old Las Vegas resident, died by suicide on the 33rd floor after barricading himself in the building, which houses Blackstone and the NFL headquarters.
The suspect had a concealed carry license for a handgun and an expired private investigator license, sources told CNN.
Tributes poured in for the victims from the state’s lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Jeffries wrote on X that he was “deeply disturbed by the horrific shooting.”
“Praying hard for the brave NYPD officer impacted and all other victims of this tragedy,” Jeffries said. “May God watch over our city during this challenging moment.”
Schumer said he’s “praying for everyone affected” and called for lawmakers to “do more to stop gun violence in America.”
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand added on X that she was monitoring the shooting.
“I’m praying for our first responders and everyone at the scene,” she said.
