Murder, Rape, and Robbery Rates Fall, New FBI Date Shows

New FBI data shows crime rates fell in 2024, with violent crime as a whole falling by 4.5% compared with 2023. The FBI estimates a violent crime occurred about every 26 seconds in the U.S. last year.

“We are not letting up. We have multiple operations going on nationwide to clear violent criminal trash off of your streets,” FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino wrote on X in response to the news.

Reported murders fell by nearly 15% in 2024, robbery by nearly 9%, rape by 5.2%, and aggravated assault by 3%.

Property crime fell by 8.1% last year, with motor vehicle theft down 18.6%, burglary down 8.6%, and larceny 5.5%.

Hate crimes are also reported to have fallen by 1.5% in 2024 when compared to 2023. The top five race or ethnic groups to experience hate crimes in 2024 include black/African American, Jewish, gay, white, and Hispanic/Latino.

Bongino pledged the FBI will continue to update Americans all summer “on arrest numbers from operation ‘Summer Heat’ as we work with our state and local partners to make American streets the safest they’ve ever been.”

Operation Summer Heat is “the FBI’s nationwide initiative targeting violent crime, gangs, and dismantling transnational criminal organizations,” according to the agency.

Tuesday, the same day the FBI’s latest crime data was released, President Donald Trump took to social media and warned that crime is “out of control” in Washington, D.C.

“Local ‘youths’ and gang members, some only 14, 15, and 16-years-old, are randomly attacking, mugging, maiming, and shooting innocent Citizens, at the same time knowing that they will be almost immediately released,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

If D.C. “doesn’t get its act together,” Trump warned, “we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they’re not going to get away with it anymore.”

Trump shared his comments above a photo of a bloodied young man who the president said was “beaten mercilessly by local thugs.”

FBI data shows violent crime dipped in D.C. in 2021 and 2022 but rose back to pre-COVID 19 pandemic levels by 2023.

“If this continues, I am going to exert my powers, and FEDERALIZE this City,” Trump said, adding, “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
