MAGA lawmaker just created brand new calamity for Mike Johnson: report

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is facing a new crisis that’s brewing despite his sending lawmakers home to avoid the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) intends to file a discharge petition to force a floor vote on banning stock trades for members of Congress — which could put the speaker in a bind, reported Politico.

“Like the parallel push for a vote on releasing the Epstein files, it’s poised to pit Johnson against rank-and-file Republicans who are thirsty to challenge elite corruption – whether their leadership likes it or not,” the website reported.

Johnson has indicated he personally supports the ban, but allowing a floor vote could anger some fellow Republicans, and the bill would probably fail in the Senate.

“Yet if Johnson stands in the way,” Politico reported, “he risks fueling a narrative triggered by the Epstein fight that he’s protecting the rich and powerful and against transparency.”

Luna still must gather 218 signatures to force a vote, but Johnson could potentially wriggle out of his jam if Republicans diverge on how to best approach stock trading restrictions, and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) is already leading bipartisan discussions on a compromise measure that would be part of a broader bill.

“Since I introduced the first bill on this subject, we’ve built a coalition in support of a comprehensive and strong solution to end stock trading for members of Congress,” Roy told Politico. “We’re working over August to merge various ideas and get Republican leadership to move on it. We gave them time to finish the [megabill] — that time is passed.

Rep. Seth Magaziner (R-RI), who’s working on that measure with Roy, said the ban they’re discussing would not apply to the president or vice president, as some Democrats would like to see, but there’s additional disagreement over lawmakers paying taxes after divesting stocks they already own.

“Where you’ll start losing Democrats is if the bill doesn’t have teeth,” Magaziner said.
