‘Kind of suspect’: Expert in awe at Trump nominee’s weak denial of explosive allegation

Former federal prosecutor Ankush Khardori told MSNBC’s Ari Melber that Emil Bove, former President Donald Trump’s Justice Department loyalist tapped for a lifetime appellate court nomination, barely even denied the disqualifying allegations that he pushed DOJ officials to defy federal court orders.

Senate Republicans have advanced Bove’s nomination at a breakneck pace despite a stream of whistleblowers emerging to allege his unethical behavior, including a new one just this week.

“Let’s start with the corroboration,” said Melber, an attorney by training. “When you have former government officials speak out, there’s a whistleblower process actually supposed to give them extra protection. People remember from the Ukraine impeachment and other issues where this has come up. But we can’t just always take one person’s account as definitive. What does it say to you that this original account from Mr. Reuveni, which talked about the ‘F you’ and all that, seems to be getting extra support?”

“As we’ve noted, Mr. Bove gave a kind of a broad denial,” Melber continued, reading out his response: “‘I have no recollection of saying anything of that kind. I’ve said things encouraging litigators to fight hard for valid positions.’ But your view on whether this is corroboration?”

“It does seem to be corroboration, as I — you know, I actually, I’m not sure I would characterize that even as a denial, right?” said Khardori. “I mean, it’s ‘I don’t recall,’ it’s not exactly denial. I mean, that’s what he told … Senator Adam Schiff when he was asked about this at his confirmation hearing.”

“This meeting was not that long ago. The alleged meeting was in mid-March,” he added. “So the idea that if this occurred, you somehow forgot about it, you want to maintain some wiggle room is already kind of suspect, if you ask me.”
