For many years, attorney George Conway was a prominent figure in the Republican Party. But his disdain for President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement was so vehement that he left the GOP in 2018 and has been an independent ever since. After decades of favoring Republican presidents, Conway supported former President Joe Biden in 2020 and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in 2024.
Trump is now six and one-half months into his second presidency. During an appearance on The Bulwark’s vodcast posted on Thursday night, August 7, Conway, now 61, lamented that his former party is in total disarray — from the Jeffrey Epstein controversy to congressional redistricting/gerrymandering efforts in Texas.
Trump and his allies handling of the Epstein case, Conway argued, has been a disaster.

Conway told The Bulwark’s Sam Stein, “The White House’s position should be: Ask the Justice Department. We’ve already said everything we have to say about this.”
Conway said of House Republicans and Epstein, “I don’t think these subpoenas will help them in any way. Again, it’s all because they haven’t produced the documents. Everybody knows that. And they had to send Congress home, basically, so they wouldn’t produce…. and people wouldn’t file legislation or whatever (and) make demands for these documents. I think they’re kind of stuck in a box here, and the more they try to wiggle out of it, the more attention they draw to it.”
Conway also commented, “It’s completely insane.”
The Never Trump conservative was equally critical of Texas Republicans who are threatening to take legal action against Democratic members of the state legislature who fled Texas in response to GOP redistricting/gerrymandering plans.

Conway told Stein, “It’s crazy. To have redistricting to create political advantage — partisan political advantage — in numbers in the House of Representatives…. It’s going to be chaos, and they basically have to do it within a year. Because primaries are going to start happening in less than a year. It really kind of reeks, actually. It’s horrible, and it really shows you that the Republicans are quite fearful of 2026.”
