On Wednesday, 28-year active-duty Army Sergeant Quornelius Radford opened fire at Fort Stewart in Georgia, leaving five people wounded.
During a presser following the incident, Brigadier General John Lubas noted that fellow soldiers tackled Radford as soon as he opened fire. These heroes prevented untold additional violence.
“Soldiers in the area that witnessed the shooting immediately, and without hesitation, tackled the soldier, subdued him, and allowed law enforcement to then take him into custody,” Lubas said.
Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll noted the bravery of the soldiers who stopped the perpetrator.
“I, and the administration, and President Trump could not be more proud of them. They are everything that is good about this nation. They are the best among us in our country, they are the best among us in the Army.”

In his remarks, Secretary Driscoll noted, “One of the more important things we were able to do this morning, though, is to recognize the heroism of these six soldiers.”
“One of the soldiers tackled the person…so just think about this…they were unarmed and ran and tackled an armed person who they knew was actively shooting their buddies, their colleagues, their fellow soldiers.”
“Another soldier jumped on top of the person to subdue them until federal law enforcement was able to arrive.”
“The other soldiers, immediately using their training they had developed over years and years, started to take over caring for mass casualties, the hospitals they took them to in March had just run a mass casualty exercise for a moment just like this.”
