‘Good riddance!’ Trump erupts at ex-Republican in midnight tirade over switching parties

President Donald Trump lashed out at Georgia’s former lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan after he switched parties.

Duncan has been an outspoken critic of the former president since he attempted to overturn his 2020 election loss in Georgia and elsewhere, and this week he announced that he was leaving the Republican Party to become a Democrat, and Trump heaped scorn on the former elected official.

“Failed former Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan, of Georgia, is a total loser,” Trump posted Friday at 1:08 a.m. EST. “Was never able to get anything done, all he ever did was complain. We didn’t want him in the Republican Party any longer, so I’m told he became a Democrat. Good riddance Geoff. You don’t even have a chance!!!”

Duncan, who served as lieutenant governor from 2019 until 2023, said he’s considering a run for higher office after switching parties, and there has been speculation in Georgia that he might launch a campaign for governor to succeed Gov. Brian Kemp, who cannot run for re-election due to term limits.

“My journey to becoming a Democrat started well before Donald Trump tried to steal the 2020 election in Georgia,” Duncan wrote in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution announcing his party switch. “There’s no date on a calendar or line in the sand that points to the exact moment in time my political heart changed, but it has. My decision was centered around my daily struggle to love my neighbor, as a Republican.”
