‘Free at last’: GOP’s Tim Scott uses MLK quote to justify Texas redistricting plan

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) used a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to justify a Texas redistricting effort that Democrats say hurts Black and Hispanic voters.

“Making comparisons, they have nothing to do with one another, doesn’t make it better,” Scott told Fox News host Harris Faulkner on Wednesday after one Democrat said that redistricting was like policies that came ahead of the Holocaust.

“It’s a veil. The truth of the matter is that they’ve lost their minds and they’re losing their voters,” the senator continued. “Think about what the Democrats have done to minority communities around the country. They have devastated minority communities.”

Scott praised President Donald Trump for his inroads with Black and Hispanic voters.

“That means redistricting, as you see, these states’ folks, fill full of more people,” he explained before quoting King. “They’re going to redraw those maps so as to maximize the opportunity of the new citizens who say free at last, free at last.”

“They want to experience it, and President Trump has delivered,” Scott added.
