Republicans are considering turning on one of their own, according to a new report.
Politico reported on Wednesday that MAGA Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) is in hot water with the caucus because of multiple accusations of impropriety. Mills has been accused of benefiting from federal contracts while in office, assaulting a onetime girlfriend in his Washington apartment, and threatening another former girlfriend with revenge porn.
The outlet’s reporters described the events as a drumbeat of “tawdry allegations.”
“GOP leaders in the House and in his home state appear to be betting that Mills’ various messes will sort themselves out without blowing back on the party more broadly — and potentially threatening its hold on power,” the outlet reported.
Mills has denied all wrongdoing. In a statement to Politico, the lawmaker said the claims against him are “false” and that he has always “conducted [himself] with integrity.”
Even if Mills can survive backlash from the GOP, the events have raised the spectre of conflict with Democrats. At least three Democrats have already filed to challenge Mills in the 2026 elections, Politico reported.
“Among House Republicans, quiet concerns have been brewing for months about whether Mills’ behavior could give Democrats a real opening,” according to the report. “Some of his GOP colleagues are wondering if they should start looking for another candidate to back in the district, according to three Republicans granted anonymity to describe private talks.”
“What if he is arrested for real?” one of the anonymous sources told Politico.
“And then this whole other issue is disturbing,” one lawmaker said about the threat allegations.
