CNN’s Pamela Brown sat down with self-described Christian nationalist pastor Doug Wilson, who counts Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as a follower, and she was flabbergasted by his views on women.
The Idaho-based right-wing preacher has expanded his network of churches into Washington, D.C., where the defense secretary and his family worship on Sundays, and Wilson’s theocratic views are gaining influence among other MAGA conservatives with an assist from the newly created White House Faith Office, reported CNN.
“Every society is theocratic,” Wilson told Brown at his Christ Church in Moscow. “The only question is who’s ‘Theo’? In Saudi Arabia, Theo is Allah. In a secular democracy, it would be Demos, the people. In a Christian republic, it’d be Christ … If I went to Saudi Arabia, I would fully expect to live under their god’s rules.”
Wilson advocates for a patriarchal society in which women are expected to submit to their husbands, and he supports repealing the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote, and Brown asked the pastor to explain the basis for his views.
“Women are the kind of people that people come out of,” Wilson said. “No, it doesn’t take any talent to simply reproduce. Biologically, the wife and mother, who is the chief executive of the home, is entrusted with three or four or five eternal souls.”
Brown stared at him incredulously, her eyes bulging and her jaw muscles clenched, and after Wilson’s response she pointed out that she was a working journalist and the mother of three children.
“Good for you,” he said, and Brown asked whether that was an issue for him. “No, it’s not automatically an issue.”
Wilson, who wants to outlaw abortion and homosexuality and has justified slavery as a biblical institution, claims his ultimate goal is to bring about the second coming of Christ and impose a full-on theocracy in the U.S., but he insists that his vision would not resemble “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
“I’m not a white nationalist, I’m not a fascist, I’m not a I’m not a racist, I’m not a misogynist,” Wilson said.
