Rep. Mike Flood (R-NE) was inundated with shouting and fury Monday evening as he tried to hold a town hall in Lincoln.
It’s the second time Flood has held a town hall that was taken over by angry constituents, after his attempt in March.
Flood’s town hall went off the rails as he tried to sell the newly passed Trump-backed megabill of tax cuts and cutbacks to Medicaid, food assistance, and green energy credits, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” As he started talking about it, constituents started shouting, and some yelled, “Did you read it?”
“It talks about two big changes to the Medicaid program,” said Flood. “One of those changes is that if you are able to work, and you are able-bodied, you have to work. If you choose not to work, you do not get free health care. You do not get free health care.”
The audience, who had shouted throughout that explanation, erupted in a chorus of boos.
“Okay, okay, so here’s a question,” he said, trying to regain control of the crowd. “So here’s a question. Do you think that people who are 28 years old that can work and refuse to work should get free health care?” The crowd erupted in shouts of “Yes!”
“I don’t think the majority of Nebraskans agree with you,” he shot back.
Another key moment came when a constituent asked why the legislation cut food stamps.
“We do not have unlimited money in the United States,” he replied, triggering yet another wave of shouts and anger from the crowd.
