Ten Thousand March in Argentina’s Largest Protest Against the Genocide in Gaza

Over 10,000 people filled the streets of Buenos Aires on August 9 in Argentina’s largest mobilization yet against Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Demonstrations also erupted in Córdoba, La Plata, and cities across the country.

Teachers, high school students, healthcare workers, human rights organizations, and the Left marched to demand an end to the genocide. Organized by left and anti-zionist Jewish organizations, the march sent a clear message to far-right president Javier Milei — one of Zionism’s most loyal supporters — and the world that working and young people reject the government’s complicity in the genocide and will continue to shout their solidarity with Palestine and against its occupation.

The Party of Socialist Workers (PTS) and Left and Workers Front — Unity (FIT-U) marched alongside thousands of people, with leaders like Myriam Bregman, Nicolás del Caño, and Christian Castillo joining the call to stop the starvation and massacre.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s latest plan to fully occupy Gaza and expel one million people deepens a genocide condemned internationally. Mass mobilization is the only force that can stop it. Milei’s government stands with Netanyahu — Argentina’s people stand with Gaza.

There were also protests throughout the country, with large gatherings in cities such as Córdoba and La Plata.

The demonstration in Buenos Aires was attended by the forces that make up the FIT-U, with the PTS-Left Front column standing out.

The fact that Saturday’s mobilization was the largest protest against the genocide to date shows the massive support that is growing internationally for the liberation of Palestine; it is especially significant given the fact that until now the movement for Palestine has been more limited in Argentina, where a portion of its sizable Jewish community — the largest in Latin America — has historically supported Israel and Zionism and where that support is bolstered by the polices of President Milei.

In recent months, however — due to Israel’s policy of starvation and Netanyahu’s plan to take over Gaza City and the whole strip — the voice of the anti-Zionist Jewish community in Argentina is growing louder and louder, joining with the Left and students and workers who are awakening in support of the Palestinian people. These voices are part of the anti-Zionist sentiment that has changed the Jewish diaspora internationally with thousands of Jewish people taking the streets unified by the slogan of “Not in our name.”

As Myriam Bregman, former president candidate and referent of the Argentinian Left said to La Izquierda Diario, “it is unacceptable the utilization of malnutrition as a weapon of extermination.”

Protests in Argentina joined the recent massive demonstrations against the invasion of Gaza City in countries across Europe, The United States, Morocco, Chile, Australia, and elsewhere. In the context of the protest, Christian Castillo, congressman of the PTS-Left Front said to La Izquierda Diario: “Benjamin Netanyahu intends to occupy Gaza entirely, threatening to displace one million Palestinians from the most populated city while even the head of the Israeli army is against the operation. Israel most be stopped, the Genocide most stop now.”
