‘Dangerous’: Ex-GOP official labels new Trump plan ‘obvious attempt at usurping Democracy’

President Donald Trump is calling for a new census as Republican-led states consider mid-decade congressional redistricting, and a former GOP lieutenant governor called his moves an “obvious attempt” to undermine democracy.

The president posted Thursday morning on Truth Social that he had “instructed our Department of Commerce to immediately begin work on a new and highly accurate CENSUS based on modern day facts and figures,” adding that anyone who was “illegally” in the U.S. would “not be counted,” and former Georgia lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan told “CNN News Central” that his plans were “dangerous.”

“I’ve got a lot to say about both parties gerrymandering across the country,” said Duncan, who announced this week that he had left the GOP and become a Democrat. “I mean, it’s – both are guilty of it, but, yeah, going back to what Donald Trump’s doing, I mean, if this Truth Social post that just went out there – of course, I don’t have Truth Social. I get to save a few minutes of my life every day not reading the propaganda, but, I mean, this this is dangerous. I mean, this is another attempt at usurping democracy, an obvious attempt, and I hope more and more Americans see what’s going on here. I mean, if you don’t like the numbers or you don’t like the math, the Constitution doesn’t say change it. It says work through a process, and Donald Trump doesn’t want to work through a process. He wants to exert power in a, you know, authoritarian way, and this is dangerous. But, you know, going back to to gerrymandering, if Democrats and Republicans want to do the right thing, I mean, you’ve got to you’ve got to isolate the process.”

“Putting it in the hands of the very people that you’re either, you know, allowing to stay elected or stay in control of whatever statehouse they’ve got, or congressional chamber, is not the best move forward, and both sides need to need to work for it,” Duncan added. “If Donald Trump wants to do something serious here, which I’m not saying he does, but if he really, truly wanted to tackle this problem, he would work on some sort of law or some sort of process or lead the lead the effort in trying to create a bipartisan attempt to district.”
