Social media blew up Friday as MAGA supporters reacted to President Donald Trump’s nuclear threat against Russia over comments made by Dmitry Medvedev.
Medvedev, the former Russian president and current deputy chairman of the Russian Federation’s security council, sent a message to Trump this week reminding him “that Moscow possessed Soviet-era nuclear strike capabilities of last resort.”
On Truth Social, Trump wrote Friday, “Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump wrote, adding, “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
Although many MAGA commentators supported the president’s move, still others were alarmed by it.
“This is lunacy,” wrote @andrewmaga84.
@SimonSaysKnow, whose followers include Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), wrote, “This is how wars are started.”
Author Juanita Broaddrick expressed her shock to her nearly two million followers, “Whoa!!! Always scary when you hear about any confrontations with Russia.”
The account of @unbaffle_me was concerned that Trump gave away too much national security information in his post.
“How often do we make public where and when we position our nuclear submarines? I can tell you – never. Absolutely never,” they wrote.
Commentator Fake Vivek agreed, posting, “We shouldn’t be announcing any strategic moves to the world.”
Trump supporter @JamesKInFlorida wrote, “More broken promises.”
@professornez simply wrote, “HOLY….”
“This is f—– absurd. He said he’d end the Ukraine Russia conflict before he even took office. This puts American lives at risk,” wrote political commentator @DMichaelTripi.
Retired newsman Kurt Schemers lamented, “….so it begins.”
On Truth Social, Trump supporter @brookstucker wrote, “the question is…War, who is it good for?…” while self-described MAGA supporter @abdulalitpp wrote, “Mr President it’s not a good idea to fight with Russia. Thank you for attention to this matter. Peace.”
